Learn Some Basic Knowledge about Loose Diamonds before Buying Them

If you are in the market to buy a beautiful engagement ring or any other kind of diamond jewelry, then you should not only be educated on loose diamonds, but you should also know a little bit of information about the jeweler you are purchasing them from. The internet is a great tool to use to research topics you are unfamiliar with. By going online and viewing the website of the jeweler and reading reviews about the company, you will have a great as to who you are doing business with.

It should be easy to find reviews about your local jeweler. They may have plenty of testimonials on their website, but of course all of these are going to be positive. I am not saying you should seek out negative reviews of the company, but you should go to another website that is not affiliated with the jeweler at all. This will provide an unbiased view of the company. You should also visit their website and see how it appears. It should be well organized and easy to navigate. It should also provide a lot of information on the services they provide. You never know what you will get with your loose diamonds purchases until you ask. You may just receive lifetime cleanings or the ability to upgrade the diamond down the road.

Why Diamonds? I’ll Tell You Why

I get a version of that question a lot. People who know what I write about and what my interests are come up to me and basically what they are asking is “Why diamonds?” I get it so often actually that now I have to resist the urge to simply say “Why not?” and just keep walking on. Then I remind myself that just because I happen to know so much about these stones doesn’t mean everyone else does, so I try to back them up a bit and find out what it is they want to know.

Some people are looking for investment advice. They have heard there is a market and they want more information. I explain to them that when you have the chance to invest in something with a proven track record of almost two thousand years it is probably a better, and certainly more stable, investment than the latest tech I.P.O. Others want to know why diamonds are such an important part of the history of jewelry and is it important to buy jewelry that features them and not some other gemstone. That, I tell them, is a more personal decision. I happen to like the look when they are perfectly cut, but other people have other tastes. I also add, however, that if they are talking about engagement rings, there is no substitution. If they don’t learn that from me, they certainly will from the woman they try to give it to.

Get trustworthy reports while buying Loose Diamonds

The certifying institutes are respected third parties with independent labs, which means that their reports are trustworthy and accurate. In fact, they are so well regarded that, if your loose diamonds have a certification, they are worth more by merely having been graded by the Gemological Institute of America (or the European Gemological Laboratory). These labs are the premier credential of a diamond's value. The GIA, for instance, will even use a micro-laser to mark certified loose diamonds with their matching report number.

When you are buying certified diamonds wholesale, take time to familiarize yourself with the diamond dossiers put out by the gemological societies. Certified loose diamonds are graded (and therefore priced) on many facets, from the well-known cut, clarity, etc. to more subtle aspects, like polish, finish, symmetry, and so forth. Several factors are ranked on qualitative scales, but when the GSI ranks loose diamonds as “excellent,” they have over a half-century of experience backing that rating. The guides also provide scales that help to explain ranking and position of this-or-that characteristic on their scale.

“Forewarned is forearmed” is an especially true saying when it comes to buying certified loose diamonds. As diamonds are such a high-value item, frauds and fraudulent claims abound. Educate yourself on the basics of buying loose diamonds and you'll see that Certified Loose Diamonds are the only way to go. With trusted institutes providing accurate reports that are available to interested buyers, certification ensures that consumers are satisfied and everyone gets a fair shake.
