Why Diamonds? I’ll Tell You Why

I get a version of that question a lot. People who know what I write about and what my interests are come up to me and basically what they are asking is “Why diamonds?” I get it so often actually that now I have to resist the urge to simply say “Why not?” and just keep walking on. Then I remind myself that just because I happen to know so much about these stones doesn’t mean everyone else does, so I try to back them up a bit and find out what it is they want to know.

Some people are looking for investment advice. They have heard there is a market and they want more information. I explain to them that when you have the chance to invest in something with a proven track record of almost two thousand years it is probably a better, and certainly more stable, investment than the latest tech I.P.O. Others want to know why diamonds are such an important part of the history of jewelry and is it important to buy jewelry that features them and not some other gemstone. That, I tell them, is a more personal decision. I happen to like the look when they are perfectly cut, but other people have other tastes. I also add, however, that if they are talking about engagement rings, there is no substitution. If they don’t learn that from me, they certainly will from the woman they try to give it to.
